We are as excited as a litter of puppies to announce that every month from the last Saturday of July we will be mixing our love of all things gastronomic with a FREE market brimming with vintage as Modern Shows® heads to the fabulous Mercato Metropolitano, South London’s most awesome street food emporium with a new monthly specialist smalls show including art posters and rugs aptly named Midcentury Mercato (Midcentury Market) .
Tucked away on a Peabody site off Elephant and Castle, a road away from the famous tourist spot Borough Market,is foodie heaven with its own Enoteca wine salon and German brewery plus a heap of high end foodie delights from around the world to get your teeth into. This is not street food. Well not as you know it. It’s the modern food hall. And with a small cinema, a barber, a no plastic supermarket, a community chat space and much much more no wonder Modern Shows®, Crafty Fox design show and young bands all want to be a part of it.
Run by Italians who have done this before on their home ground and now have spots in Miami and Paris and will soon launch in Mayfair, you know there is going to be the best pizza, fresh pasta, arancini and fritto misto that money can buy. Expect German spatzle, gooey melted raclette cheese, duck and ribs you will not stop talking about for days, vegan rice bowls and the best Turkish wraps, Indian dahls, Mexican tacos, and Lebanese food you can wrap your teeth around. Come hungry.
With a slew of specialist bars selling everything from cocktails to small-batch gin, biodynamic wine and craft beer including their own German brand the outside is primed to be packed this Summer. Sunny days are already full. The place is massive and there is talk of expanding too.
This place takes no prisoners. Its big and bold, sustainable and sensitive. Bring a plastic bottle in and it will be taken away from you. If dealers use bubble wrap or food stand use plastic they will be asked to leave. The staff work hard to stick to their sustainability ethos.
They are a movement not a market which is why Peabody has given them even more space in Elephant Park to grow into with a bakery in the offing. We’ve been blown away by the place since we first set our eyes in it when it first opened.
